51-year-old Nirmala Devi Arjun and 65-year-old William Peter Canning went to Arjun’s apartment in Vancouver, Canada, on January 29, 2009.
Canning was a struggling, sometimes homeless man who watched Arjun’s dog when she was working.
At some point that night, Arjun attacked Canning with a meat cleaver. She tracked him through the apartment and inflicted more than 50 wounds upon him.
Reports indicated two friends went to her home the night of the attack, but it’s unclear what they witnessed.
The morning after the murder, Arjun contacted authorities to report his death. She was questioned but released the same day.
A year and a half later, police came knocking and arrested her.
At trial, she was found guilty of second-degree murder.
On April 27th, 2014, she was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison.
