Maya Goes Missing

39-year-old Maya Millete was last seen on January 7, 2021. It was about 4:40 PM when her neighbor’s camera captured her as she arrived at her Chula Vista, California home, after leaving a car wash.

Earlier that day, she had made an appointment with a divorce lawyer for the following week as she was planning to leave her husband, Larry.

On January 8th, her family tried to contact her, but Larry told them she locked herself in a room and wouldn’t come out.

On the 9th, Larry told them the same story, but this time they demanded he open the door. When he did, Maya was nowhere to be found.

The family filed a missing persons report, and police began investigating.

They got their hands on audio that captured eight loud bangs at around 10 PM, the same day Maya was last seen. Experts have told the media the loud bangs are gunshots.

You could hear child voices on the audio after the loud bangs, leading investigators to suspect that Larry put the two oldest children, who were 11 and 9 at the time, outside while he covered up the alleged murder.

The next morning, Larry didn’t go to work; instead, he left the residence at 6:45 am without his mobile phone. He took his 4-year-old while leaving his older children behind. He returned after 11 hours and 21 minutes. When questioned, he claimed he went to Solana Beach.

After searching the Millete home multiple times and investigating for 9 months, Larry was arrested on October 19, 2021, and charged with her murder, even though there was no body.

Legal Proceedings

He pleaded not guilty, and over the years, there were several trial delays, but his trial finally started in May 2026.

According to CourthouseNews, Prosecutors portrayed him as a jealous and possessive man who killed his wife because she had an affair and was planning to leave him.

Larry didn’t take the stand, but his defense tried to convince the jury that Maya could still be out there somewhere.

The jury had the option to convict him of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, or involuntary manslaughter. They convicted him of first-degree murder. He will be sentenced at a later date.
