Background

Dave Meggett was drafted into the NFL by the New York Giants in 1989.

He played for three teams between 1989 and 1998 as a running back, receiver, and a kick returner. He was never a star, but he was a solid player who won a Super Bowl ring and made two Pro Bowls.

During his time in the NFL, he had a few run-ins with the law. He was arrested in 1990 for soliciting a prostitute, but he was later found not guilty of the charges.

In 1995, he was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend. The judge acquitted him as he believed the woman was the aggressor and Meggett was defending himself.

In 1998, the New England Patriots were in Toronto for a preseason game.

Meggett, who was playing for the team at the time, was arrested for allegedly violating an escort in a hotel. The Patriots cut him from the team immediately to avoid bad publicity.

He went on to play two games with the New York Jets, but he didn’t play well.

He never played in the NFL again after 1998.

When the Toronto case went to trial in 2000, it ended with a hung jury.

In 2006, he was accused of violating an ex-girlfriend in North Carolina. He was later convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery and given two year’s probation.

South Carolina Case

Soon after, he moved to South Carolina. According to SBNation, in September 2008, he was accused of violating a 17-year-old. The young lady claimed she was assaulted at his sister’s home.

According to Charleston County, Meggett was charged with criminal sexual conduct and released on $50,000 bond.

In January 2009, he was arrested for violating a 21-year-old College of Charleston student. According to court records, he had previously loaned the young lady $200.

He broke into her home to collect. When she woke up and said she didn’t have the money, he told her, I’m going to “take a down payment now,” and then he violated her.

Legal Proceedings

At trial, he was convicted of first-degree burglary and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The charges were later dropped in the case of the 17-year old because the accuser was not considered credible.

He could be released as early as July 6th, 2034. He will be 68 years old.
