Crime
On August 10th, 2020, 31-year-old Justin Garmon was released from prison after serving four and a half years of a nine-year drug-related sentence.
Instead of turning his life around, he immediately returned to his old ways.
On August 25th, 2020, Garmon and two other guys hopped in a Chevy Malibu and went out looking for a man whom they thought killed their friend Doobie. They went to Austin, a neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, where they thought the man lived.
After driving around for a while, the trio saw a 30-year-old Darry Toney walking down the street. Thinking he was the man who killed Doobie, Garmon got out of the car’s front passenger seat and confronted the man.
Toney walked away to avoid conflict, but he didn’t get far as he was shot in the back.
Garmon then stood over Toney and shot him until his gun was empty, then he and the two other men fled the scene.
Toney was taken to the hospital with five gunshot wounds. He died an hour later.
The shooting was caught on video, and police were able to make contact with the woman who rented the Malibu a few weeks later.
She told authorities her ex-boyfriend used the car on August 25th, 2020, and when he returned, he told her, “We got the guy who killed Doobie.”
But he was wrong; Toney had nothing to do with Doobie’s death, and they killed the wrong man.
After searching the car on October 10th, 2020, police found a bag in the trunk with Garmon’s parole paperwork inside it. After checking Garmon’s social media, they saw a photo he posted on the day of Toney’s murder wearing the same outfit as the gunman.
Garmon was arrested in November 2024.
Legal Proceedings
In 2024, Garmon pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
It’s unclear what happened to the other men that were involved in Toney’s murder.
