Murder of Austin Metcalf

According to the Dallas Observer, a planned track meet between several North Texas high schools on April 2nd, 2025, at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, turned gloomy when the weather didn’t cooperate. Each school had a tent. 17-year old Centennial High School student Karmelo Anthony sat under a tent for Memorial High School.

When 17-year old Memorial High School student Austin Metcalf saw Anthony, he approached him. He asked Anthony to leave the tent and sit with his school, but Anthony wasn’t in the mood to be bossed around, and he refused. Soon thereafter, things escalated as Austin pushed or grabbed Anthony. Anthony reached into his backpack, pulled out a knife, and stabbed Austin once in the chest, and then he fled.

He didn’t get far and was quickly arrested and taken to the Collin County Jail. Meanwhile, Austin died, changing dozens of lives forever. The Dallas Observer reported that Anthony confessed to the crime and wanted to know if he could claim self-defense.

Racial Tensions

The crime became a huge topic of conversation in the United States because of the racial element of a Black teen stabbing a White teen. Many Black people sided with Anthony, saying that he was defending himself. White people disagreed. They felt that the circumstances didn’t warrant deadly force.

Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, agreed that deadly force was not warranted, and his son was murdered. At the same time, he dismissed the racial angle that many on social media were trying to politicize and profit from.

Anthony is charged and released

Anthony was charged with first-degree murder as an adult. His bond was initially set at $1 million. According to FoxNews, people supported his quest for freedom by donating more than $600,000 to a GiveSendGo campaign. Later, Collin County Judge Angela Tucker cut it by 75%. Anthony was released on April 14, 2025. As part of his released conditions, he was placed on house arrest and had to wear an ankle monitor.

NBCDFW reported on May 13th, 2025, that Anthony would receive his high school diploma from Frisco Independent School District, but would not attend senior activities or his graduation.

Legal Proceedings

FoxNews reported that when the trial started with jury selection on June 1st, 2026, supporters on both sides gathered outside the courtroom, and things were not cordial. People held derogatory signs and shouted threats and insults to make their feelings known.

As the days passed, people who were inside the tent during the confrontation took the stand as the prosecution’s key witnesses. One person told the court that Anthony was asked to leave about 15 times prior to things escalating. Another witness testified that Austin said, “I’m not going to fight you at a track meet.”

The state said it was a verbal disagreement that didn’t have to turn deadly. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye said, “You don’t get to meet a shove with a stab.” He also called it “Unjustified murder.”

Anthony’s defense team said he was defending himself against Austin, who was much larger than him. Anthony didn’t take the stand on his behalf.

Jurors got the case on June 9th, 2026. According to the Dallas Observer, they deliberated for three hours before convicting him of murder. He was facing 5-99 years in prison. Later in the day, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison, with FoxNews reporting that the jury rejected a “sudden passion” argument that could have reduced his sentence.

FoxNews reported that during victim impact statements, Jeff said, “This was never about race or politics. We all bleed the same color.” Austin’s mother also spoke saying, “You may have been sentenced to 35 years behind bars. You should feel lucky, I’ve been sentenced to a lifetime without my son.”

He will be eligible for parole on November 26th, 2043, after serving half of his sentence. Most people in Texas don’t get out on the first try, so he shouldn’t get his hopes up about walking free on that date. If he is forced to serve his full sentence, he will be released on May 27th, 2061, when he is 54 years old.

Appeal

As they moved toward the appeals process, Fox4News reported that Anthony’s new legal team put forth allegations of bad behavior in order to damage the victim’s character. One of his lawyers said he felt that Austin had “a pattern of aggressive acts towards people of color.”

The state responded with damaging information on Anthony’s past, including threats, fights, and a knife obsession.

Apparently, the state and the defense had a gentleman’s agreement not to bring those things into the trial. Anthony’s trial attorneys admitted that he didn’t testify out of fear that his past would be brought up during cross-examination. The appeals process moves slowly and likely won’t be heard until 2027

Aftermath

The racial element of the case led many people to become emotionally invested in the outcome. With strong emotions, you may say something you shouldn’t. Fox4News reported in September 2026 that 34-year-old Sharifa Nicole Henderson of Kansas City, Missouri, was hit with three federal charges for allegedly threatening the Metcalf family during the trial.

Prosecutors say she sent multiple threatening messages to the family on Facebook. In one message, she allegedly said, “I will hunt you forever until I kill you… I will be there. You will always have to look over your [expletive] shoulder.”

Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
