Chante Jawan Mallard ‘s Background
Chante Jawan Mallard was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on June 22nd, 1976. As a youth, she was a Girl Scout, and according to her mother, she volunteered to help the mentally challenged. She was highly focused in school, and according to one of her classmates, she got straight A’s.
Later in life, she became a Texas state-certified nursing assistant and worked at several nursing homes in Fort Worth.
Murder 37-year-old Gregory Biggs
She looked like she could live an excellent life, but things changed on October 26th, 2001, when she went to a club in Arlington, Texas. She drank alcohol and took ecstasy before hopping in her 1997 check cavalier to head home.
A mile away from her residence, she hit 37-year-old Gregory Biggs. The homeless man’s upper torso got stuck in her windshield.
Instead of trying to help him, Mallard drove home with the injured man in her windshield and parked her car in the garage.
She went inside and had sex with her boyfriend before returning to check on Biggs. She apologized for hitting him, but she never tried to dislodge him from the windshield or call 911.
She checked on him a couple more times, and the next day, she found him dead. She contacted Clete Jackson to help her get the man’s body out of the windshield. Jackson and his cousin Herbert Cleveland went to her home, and the trio dislodged the body and dumped it in a nearby park.
Mallard removed the seat from her car and set one of them on fire, and then she went on with her life.
Two men discovered Biggs’ body later that day. After an investigation and autopsy, authorities determined he was hit by a car at a different location and then dumped at the park, but they didn’t have any suspects.
The case went cold, and Mallard may have gotten away with it, but she opened her big mouth. While drinking with a few friends four months later, someone wondered aloud who would drive them home later.
Mallard said she couldn’t and explained that she had an accident recently, and a man went through her windshield. According to a woman at the gathering, she said, “I hit this white man” while laughing.
Arrest and prosecution
One of her friends turned her in, and on February 26th, 2002, authorities went to her home with a search warrant and found the Cavalier with missing seats and a busted windshield, which still had blood and hair lodged in it.
Mallard was taken to the station, where she confessed and was arrested for murder and tampering with evidence.
Police also arrested Jackson and Cleveland. The cousins pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence. Jackson was sentenced to 10 years, and Cleveland to 9.
Mallard went to trial in 2003 and took the stand crying, apologizing, and saying she deserved jail time.
Prosecution witnesses testified that Biggs could have survived if she had called for help.
The jury deliberated for one hour before convicting her of murder and tampering with evidence. She could have been sentenced to as little as 5 years, but received a 50-year sentence for murder and a concurrent 10 years for tampering with evidence.
Parole
She will be eligible for parole on March 4th, 2027. If she is denied, the parole board will provide her with the reason for the denial and set another hearing for the future, which could be between 1 and 5 years.
If she continues to be denied release, she will not get out until March 3rd, 2052.
