Tony Alvin Ables Life of Crime

Tony Alvin Ables was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, on December 28th, 1954. His childhood is mostly a mystery, but his brother once testified that their father abused their mother. Eventually, the mother abandoned the family.

By the time Ables was a teen, he was a troublemaker. In 1970, when he was just 16, he participated in a robbery that left a man dead.

He ended up pleading guilty to first-degree murder. He received a life sentence. He only served 12 years before getting out on parole in 1983.

On June 25th, 1983, five months after getting out of prison, he broke into the home of 83-year-old Adeline McLaughlin. He violated her, suffocated her, and stole some items from her apartment.

The case went cold, and Ables remained free and acted like nothing happened. On Valentine’s Day, 1987, 31-year-old Deborah Kiser was found dead near a park in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was violated before she was killed.

Police learned that Kisor was in a relationship with Ables. He was never arrested for her murder. It’s unclear if that was due to a lack of evidence or if he was just not a suspect.

On June 4th, 1990, Ables and his girlfriend, 48-year-old Marlene Burns, were drinking alcohol and arguing. Ables was mad because he thought Burns was seeing someone else. Eventually, he got violent with her.

He pushed her down the stairs and then beat her for almost an hour until she was dead. His neighbors called the police after hearing the commotion. Authorities showed up and arrested the bloody Ables for first-degree murder.

An autopsy of Burn revealed her ribs were fractured in 29 places due to the brutal attack.

Legal Proceedings

Ables went to trial for Burn’s murder and was convicted without much effort. The jury recommended the death penalty in an 8 to 4 vote.

The judge overruled the jury and sentenced Ables to life because of his mental health issues and a lousy childhood.

DNA Links Him To The Murders of McLaughlin and Kiser

In 2006, DNA linked Ables to the murder of McLaughlin in 1983 and Kiser in 1987. Since he is already serving a life sentence, he has not been prosecuted for either case.

Ables is currently 70 years old. He is serving his time at South Bay Correctional in South Bay, Florida.
