Crime
On July 31, 2022, the quiet industrial park in Strongsville, Ohio, became the scene of a crash so violent that it tore a car in half. Inside the vehicle were three teenagers: 20-year-old Dominic Russo, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan, and 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla. Russo and Flanagan were killed instantly on impact. Shirilla, who had been behind the wheel, survived but with serious injuries. At first glance, the wreck appeared to be a tragic accident. But almost immediately, questions began to surface. Could this really have been an accident—or was it something far more deliberate?
By the summer of 2022, Mackenzie and Dominic had been in a relationship for more than a year. To outsiders, they looked like a typical young couple, but those who knew them closely described their relationship as volatile. Friends and family recalled frequent arguments, dramatic breakups, and reconciliations. In the weeks leading up to the crash, tensions between them were especially high. Davion, one of Dominic’s closest friends, had been spending increasing amounts of time with the pair during that period.
On the night of July 30, Mackenzie, Dominic, and Davion attended a few parties together. In the early morning hours of July 31, they left in Mackenzie’s Toyota Camry. At approximately 5:30 a.m., surveillance cameras in a nearby business park captured her vehicle turning onto Alameda Drive. What the footage revealed was chilling. Instead of slowing down, Shirilla accelerated. Investigators later determined that the car reached nearly 100 miles per hour before slamming head-on into a warehouse wall. The impact split the Camry apart and killed Russo and Flanagan instantly.
Investigation
From the beginning, investigators suspected more than reckless driving. Forensic analysis revealed no signs of mechanical failure. Data showed the accelerator had been pressed fully to the floor, and there was no evidence of braking before the crash. Toxicology tests indicated cannabis in Mackenzie’s system. Detectives digging deeper into her background uncovered videos on social media showing her engaging in reckless driving. A friend even recalled an earlier incident in which, after a fight with Dominic, Mackenzie threatened to crash her car.
Three months after the crash, the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office announced its conclusion: the crash was intentional. A grand jury indicted Mackenzie on 12 counts, including murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, and felonious assault.
Legal Proceedings
Instead of a jury trial, the case proceeded as a bench trial.
In August 2023, Judge Nancy Margaret Russo found Mackenzie guilty on all counts. In her ruling, the judge described Shirilla’s actions as “controlled, methodical, deliberate, intentional,” rejecting any argument that this had been an accident.
At sentencing, the families of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan delivered emotional victim impact statements. One relative said the two young men had been “robbed of their futures.” Shirilla, visibly distraught, apologized in court. Still, the judge imposed the maximum penalty: two concurrent life sentences with parole eligibility after fifteen years. Her driver’s license was also permanently revoked.
What happened on Alameda Drive was not a moment of reckless speed, but a deliberate act that left two young men dead and a teenage driver convicted of murder.
