Lorraine Allison Hunter Prepares To Gain From Her Husband’s Death
In 2009, Lorraine Allison Hunter’s relationship with her husband, Albert Thomas, was in trouble.
Even though Thomas worked two jobs to support her and was the only man to step up and care for her daughter, Lorraine was constantly upset that she didn’t have more money to spend.
She wanted him to provide for everything instead of her getting a job and contributing to the household. After thinking long and hard, she decided to see if he was worth more dead than alive.
She reached out to the trucking company he worked for and learned that he had a couple of life insurance policies worth two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars that would double if he was murdered.
She decided that wasn’t enough money, so she took out several fraudulent life insurance policies in her husband’s name with her as the beneficiary.
She recruited her 15-year-old daughter, Briuana Hunter, into the plot. Briuana helped her mother fill out insurance applications with Thomas’s signature forged.
Within months, Lorraine had two additional policies out on her husband: one for ten thousand dollars and another for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
With Thomas worth over 1.2 million dollars dead, she was ready to get rid of him.
Murder of Albert Thomas
With her daughter by her side, she tried to shoot and kill her husband on two different occasions as he walked through their neighborhood, but the plans failed.
On a third occasion, Lorraine and her daughter tried to take his life as he stood outside his second job. That murder attempt also failed.
On November 9th, 2009, Thomas came home and told his stepdaughter he had a sweatshirt for her. He took Lorraine and Briuana out to his truck. When he reached into the sleeping area to grab the sweatshirt, Lorraine shot him twice in the head and twice in the back.
Lorraine and her daughter left the crime scene with the assistance of Lorraine’s niece. Lorraine later called her husband’s place of work, saying she hadn’t heard from him.
One of his coworkers located the truck and found Thomas dead inside.
With her husband out of the way, Lorraine was ready to get paid, but the policy wouldn’t pay out unless she had a certified copy of his death certificate, something she was unable to obtain.
The case went cold for two years. When police arrested Lorraine’s niece for shoplifting, she decided to turn Lorraine and Briuana in.
Police arrested Lorraine and Briuana for murder in October 2011. While locked up, Lorraine tried to hire someone to kill her niece, but a jailhouse informant turned her in.
Legal Proceedings
Briuana was facing life in prison, so she turned against her mother and agreed to plead guilty to three counts of attempted murder and one count of voluntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to 18 years and four months in prison. She will be eligible for parole in 2026.
The 61-year-old Lorraine went to trial in 2017. The jury learned that a previous husband of hers was murdered in 1996, and she collected over three hundred thousand dollars in life insurance afterward.
Lorraine was convicted of Thomas’s murder and later sentenced to death.
Both Lorraine and Briuana are incarcerated in the same prison.
