In the fall of 2001, 27-year-old Jennifer Forsyth moved to Nashville with her three kids for a fresh start.
In 2004, she got a job as a prison nurse at Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennesee. There, she met and fell in love with George Hyatte. George had a long rap sheet dating back to 1990, and he was serving a 41-year sentence for robbery and aggravated assault.
After five months on the job, Jennifer was caught sneaking him food and fired. George was transferred to prison in Nashville, but their relationship continued, and they married in May of 2005 in a prison ceremony.
In July 2005, George learned from a big-mouth prison guard that the Kingston courthouse in Kingston, Tennessee, had poor security. George and Jennifer plotted his escape via a secret cellphone she had given him months earlier.
On August 9th, 2005, George went to the Kingston courthouse in Kingston, Tennessee, and pleaded guilty to a robbery charge as Jennifer sat watching. When the proceedings ended, she left the court and hopped in her SUV, but she had no plans of leaving without her husband.
When she saw a guard escorting her George to the prison transport van, she pulled up, hopped out, and pumped hot lead into 56-year-old prison transport officer Wayne “Cotton” Morgan and his partner Larry Harris.
Harris returned fire, and Jennifer was hit in the butt; however, she and George were able to get away.
Harris survived, but Morgan was hit three times and died at the hospital.
After the escape, they abandoned the Explorer and hoped in a Chevy Venture. They abandoned the Venture in Erlanger, Kentucky, and took a two-hour cab ride to a motel in Columbus, Ohio.
The cab driver recognized the duo, and after he dropped them off, he contacted authorities. On August 10th, 2005, at around 10 am, law enforcement went to the motel and took them into custody. The pair was charged with first-degree murder.
While Jennifer was in jail waiting to be sent back to Tennessee, she wrote several letters to friends and family. On multiple occasions, she referred to George and her as Bonnie and Clyde. In one letter, she said that her time on the run was the best two days of her life.
Jennifer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. She also agreed to testify against George if he went to trial. On September 17th, 2007, she was sentenced to life without parole plus 15 years.
George also pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He received the same sentence as his wife.
