Murder of Rusty Riggins

On a quiet morning in August 2007, the serene town of Flagstaff, Arizona, was rocked by a shocking discovery—a man’s lifeless body, shot in the back, lay in a home he was housesitting. The victim was Rusty Riggins, a man seemingly on the path to redemption.

But behind the closed doors of his volatile marriage lay dark secrets. His wife, Jessica Riggins, became the prime suspect. What followed was a courtroom drama where motives clashed, leaving a community divided and a family forever shattered.

What was it about Jessica that pulled her into this case? Let’s find out.

Jessica Riggins grew up in an environment marked by instability and adversity. She had a traumatic childhood that left deep emotional scars. Those formative years shaped a young woman who would find herself seeking solace and stability from men but often encountering the opposite.

By the time Jessica met Rusty Riggins in 2001, her life was already full of hardship, and their relationship, though initially promising, quickly spiraled into a pattern of mutual aggression and domestic violence.

Jessica and Rusty married in December 2004, despite a history of documented abuse. According to Jessica, her decision was led by the hope that Rusty could change and that love could conquer their demons.

This optimism, however, was repeatedly shattered by escalating incidents of violence. Rusty’s two felony convictions for domestic violence against Jessica were just the surface of their deeply troubled relationship.

By 2007, the Riggins’ marriage was coming to an end. Rusty, attempting to turn his life around, had started a moving business and was on probation for past offenses. Jessica, on the other hand, was drained from the tumultuous relationship.

On the morning of August 7, Rusty’s mother, Judith, concerned for her son’s safety, called the police. Officers discovered Rusty’s body in the master bedroom of a home he was housesitting in Flagstaff, Arizona.

He was shot once in the back at close range with a .22-caliber handgun.

The bullet pierced his lungs and heart, killing him instantly. Evidence suggested no signs of a struggle, fueling speculation of premeditation.

Jessica became the prime suspect right away, but she was long gone.

After the shooting, she fled the scene, taking a car belonging to Rusty’s mother. She drove through California, visiting her ex-husband and son, before crossing into Mexico. She was arrested a week later when she tried returning to the States.

Trial

Jessica’s trial began in January 2009 in Coconino County Superior Court. The prosecution painted her as a manipulative woman driven by greed, citing her belief that Rusty had $30,000 in savings.

According to their argument, Jessica planned to have Rusty jailed for probation violations. She hoped that with him gone, their divorce judge would allow her to access the funds through their divorce proceedings.

When her attempts to get Ruty in legal trouble failed, they argued, she resorted to murder.

They also told the jury that she bought a gun similar to the one used to kill Rusty two days before the crime, which indicated premeditation.

The defense countered with a starkly different narrative, portraying Jessica as a victim of years of relentless abuse. Her attorneys argued that she suffered from battered woman syndrome, a condition that influenced her actions on the night of the shooting.

Jessica testified tearfully about Rusty’s violent outbursts, recounting numerous incidents where she feared for her life. The defense maintained that the shooting was either an accident or a desperate act of self-defense.

The jury was unconvinced; they found inconsistencies in Jessica’s testimony, describing her as lacking credibility. She was convicted of first-degree murder, auto theft, and credit card theft.

Sentencing

On April 21, 2009, she returned to court for sentencing. The presiding judge, Danna Hendrix, acknowledged the severity of the crime, citing aggravating factors such as the use of a weapon, the financial motive, and the emotional toll on Rusty’s family.

The judge also considered Jessica’s traumatic past and her role as a mother to five children, opting for a sentence that allowed a glimmer of hope for parole. Jessica was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after twenty-five years.

She remains incarcerated, serving her sentence in an Arizona state prison. She will be 65 at her first parole hearing in 2032.
