Murder of Andre Hill
Adam Coy and his partner responded to a non-emergency suspicious vehicle call on December 22nd, 2020, just before 2:00 a.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
As 47-year-old Andre Hill walked out of the garage, he had a bright phone screen in his left hand, while his right hand was not visible as it was blocked by a parked car.
Coy started shooting and hit Hill four times. Hill died at the hospital, while Coy would say he started shooting because he thought Hill had a revolver in his hands, but it wasn’t a gun; it was a set of keys.
Coy was arrested for murder and several other charges.
Legal Proceedings
The trial was postponed several times but finally kicked off in the fall of 2024. After two weeks of testimony, Coy was convicted of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault.
At sentencing in July 2025, he maintained he acted within his training and within the law to stop a perceived threat.
The judge sentenced Coy to 15 years to life in prison. He is planning to appeal.
He is expected to be eligible for parole on October 24th, 2039.
