Adam R. Bennefield’s 2000 Domestic Violence Incident

On March 2nd, 2000, 22-year-old Adam R. Bennefield crashed a stolen car he was driving into his ex-fiancé Tara Rene Barber’s vehicle. At gunpoint, he ordered her and her friend Takina Willis out of their car and into his.

As he sped down the street at 50 miles per hour, Willis jumped out of the car to save herself. Barber, on the other hand, tried to calm her ex down by telling him she was pregnant with his child.

Luckily, the abduction ended without Barber suffering any physical harm, and Bennefield was taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and several other charges.

On September 15th, 2000, he escaped from Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden, New York, but was quickly recaptured. The pointless escape added another felony to his already long list of charges.

As he was being taken into custody, he gave this interview to the local news.

5 days later, he agreed to plead guilty to two counts of kidnapping and one count of escape. He was given 17 to 21 years in prison.

Social Media Presence

After serving 15 years, he was released on parole. He started a YouTube channel on June 22nd, 2015, but over the years, he posted 7 videos. One eye-catching video was titled “My Dr. Jeckle and Hyde imitation” where he drank from a red cup and started acting crazy. Another interesting video was titled “Inspiration speech” talking about drive, focus, and making progress in life.

The last video he posted on the channel was on February 22nd, 2022.

Murder of Keaira Hudson

At some point, he met single mother of two Keaira Hudson. It’s unclear when they met, how long they were dating, or if she knew of his background, but they were married in February 2022 and had their first child a month later.

However, this wouldn’t be a happily ever after story.

On September 28th, 2022, Kiera was beaten by her husband while she was at his sister’s home. Police were called and found Bennefield locked in the bathroom when they arrived at the scene.

Kiera would tell police he hit her, threatened to kill her, brandished knives, took her phone, and locked the door to prevent her from leaving.

Bennefield was taken to a medical center before being arrested for second-degree harassment, a charge that has a maximum penalty of 15 days in jail.

On October 2nd, 2022, Kiera called the police because she thought someone was in her home. Police arrived and looked around, but didn’t find anyone.  While they were there, she showed them a video of the beating that occurred days earlier, which was taken by an in-home camera.

With this footage, police were able to upgrade his charges to menacing and 3rd-degree assault.

On October 3rd, Keaira went to the police station to sign paperwork about the upgraded charges. During her visit, she told police that her husband had pulled her pants down and stuck his fingers inside her so he could smell her vagina and determine if she had been with other men.

That incident wasn’t captured on the in-home camera.

With this new information, authorities could have added a charge of felony sexual assault. That would have allowed them to hold Bennefield, but the charge was not added, likely due to a lack of evidence.

On October 4th, Bennefield went to the police station for a meeting and was arrested for a second time. He was given a court order to stay away from his wife, and he was released back onto the streets.

Even though the video of her being beaten was violent, the charges were misdemeanors because her injuries were not serious.

The next day, Keaira stayed at her mother’s home and left to drop her kids off at school. She was so scared, she wore a bulletproof vest to protect herself. As soon as she got around the corner, her husband pulled up and rammed her vehicle, just like he did to his ex-fiancé in 2000.

He then got out and shot his wife with a shotgun, killing her. He went on the run, but police caught up to him on October 12th.

He was charged with one count of murder in the second degree, one count of aggravated criminal contempt, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Legal Proceedings

He was convicted on all charges in November 2024, and a month later, he returned to court for sentencing.

As he was running his mouth, acting as if he did nothing wrong, the judge got tired of it and told him to shut up. They went back and forth, with Bennefield claiming he was railroaded because his jury was all white. The judge booted him out of the courtroom for his antics.

The judge completed the hearing by sentencing Bennefield to 25 years to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole in June 2047.
