On October 10th, 2005, a man at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport lost his laptop. Employees at the airport started searching everywhere.
In the woman’s bathroom, someone saw a Marriott hotel bag stuffed in the trash. They opened it up and saw a deceased baby girl inside.
The newborn was wrapped in a towel and newspapers before being stuffed in the bag. An autopsy later revealed that she was alive for one day before she was suffocated.
She was given the name “Baby Skylar,” but despite the efforts of investigators, they could not locate her mother, and the case went cold.
In 2017, authorities used DNA technology that allowed them to make a composite sketch of what the mother may have looked like.
They released the sketch to the public, hoping someone would put a name to the face, but the composite didn’t lead to any arrests, and police moved on to genetic genealogy testing.
They were able to identify someone related to the baby. Further investigation led them to identify 51-year-old Annie Sue Anderson as the child’s mother.
Police went to her home in Washington on December 21st, 2023, and arrested her. Reports indicate she confessed after her arrest, saying that she was visiting Phoenix for a real estate bootcamp.
She allegedly told authorities she didn’t know she was pregnant and, after giving birth in a hotel, held the baby underwater, then disposed of her at the airport before heading home as if nothing had happened.
She was sent back to Phoenix to face first-degree murder charges, where she pleaded not guilty. In statements to the media, her attorney has implied the baby was stillborn.
She was released on $200,000 bond on December 12th, 2024, with electronic monitoring. According to ABC15.com, a reproductive justice group helped her with the bond funds.
In November 2025, she returned to court. Her attorney asked that she be allowed to travel and said she had proven herself trustworthy by abiding by her release conditions over the past year.
The prosecution was against it, but the judge sided with the defense. Anderson can’t be monitored while out of state, but she has to provide her flight information and where she is staying. Once she returns to Arizona, she will be required to reinstall her electronic monitoring within one business day.
Her trial is scheduled to start on March 30th, 2026.
