Crime

Ariel Jamiyla Osbey  went to a home in Newton County, Georgia, on October 10th, 2023, to provide cleaning services.

She wasn’t alone that day and had her 13-month-old daughter, Imani Osbey, with her.

She left the girl in a rear-facing car seat for around 5 hours before completing the job and returning to the car.

After she pulled away from the home, she noticed something was wrong with Imani and contacted 911.

When authorities arrived, Ariel didn’t mention that she had left her daughter alone for 5 hours; she simply told them the little girl had gotten sick.

Police were suspicious of her story right away because the vehicle was extremely hot, and Imani’s hoodie was damp.

Imani was taken to the hospital, and her internal temperature was determined to be 107 degrees. She died from hyperthermia.

Ariel was questioned at the hospital and tried to lie, saying she took her daughter into the home with her while she was cleaning, but surveillance footage showed she left Imani alone and never checked on her.

Ariel was indicted on December 1st, 2023.

Legal Proceedings

She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and making a false statement on October 17, 2025. It was a non-negotiated guilty plea, meaning she was not guaranteed a specific sentence.

Ariel spoke, and others spoke on her behalf. Her defense team asked the judge for no jail time and 10 years of probation.

The prosecution sought 35 years, with the first 20 years to be served in prison.

The judge sided with the prosecution.

Ariel was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 15 years’ probation. Once she gets out, she cannot be alone with anyone under 18. She also has to stay on top of her mental health treatment
