Murders of Chara & Henry Bryant

On June 8, 2017, 16-year-old Brooklyn Reynolds dialed 911 from her home in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. She told dispatchers there had been a break-in and reported a robbery. When police arrived, however, what they found was far worse. Inside the home’s master bedroom lay the bodies of 36-year-old Chara Bryant and her husband, 37-year-old Henry Bryant. Both had been shot to death.

At first glance, the scene looked like a burglary gone wrong. A glass sliding door had been shattered, and Brooklyn portrayed herself as a traumatized witness. But as investigators examined the scene more closely, the story began to unravel. The broken glass was scattered outward, not inward, suggesting the door had been shattered from inside the home. There were no other signs of forced entry. What at first seemed like a home invasion was beginning to look staged.

Detectives quickly turned their attention to Brooklyn herself. She was Chara’s daughter and Henry’s stepdaughter. As they dug deeper, they uncovered a relationship that provided motive. Brooklyn had been secretly dating Christopher Evans, a 22-year-old man whose age she had concealed from her parents. When Chara and Henry discovered the truth, they ordered Brooklyn to end the relationship. Outwardly, she agreed. But privately, she continued to communicate with Evans and see him in secret.

On the day of the murders, Brooklyn told investigators she had simply discovered her parents dead. Christopher Evans, when questioned, initially claimed he was only a family friend. That story collapsed quickly. At Evans’s home, police recovered a gun hidden away. Surveillance footage and witness testimony also placed him at a nearby location practicing with the weapon in the days before the shooting.

Under pressure, Evans eventually confessed. He admitted that Brooklyn had let him into the house on the morning of June 8. Once inside, he shot Chara first. Henry tried to flee and struggled but was ultimately shot again in the bathroom. Evans’s description of the crime matched details investigators had not released publicly.

The case against Brooklyn strengthened when detectives recovered text messages between her and Evans. The two had discussed the murders in advance, even assigning roles — who would attack which victim and with what weapon. Brooklyn ultimately admitted her involvement, acknowledging that she had helped plan the murders and given Evans access to the home.

Legal Proceedings

Despite being just sixteen at the time, Brooklyn Reynolds was prosecuted as an adult. She was charged with complicity to commit murder. Nearly two years later, in April 2019, she entered a guilty plea. A judge sentenced her to 23 years in prison. Now 23 years old, she will be eligible for parole in January 2037.

Christopher Evans also pleaded guilty, admitting to two counts of murder and burglary. He received a 60-year sentence and will not be eligible for parole until 2074.

The murders of Chara and Henry Bryant devastated their community — a family destroyed not by intruders, but by a daughter and her much older boyfriend who conspired to end their lives.
