Crime
On the night of February 10th 2022, Christi Spicuzza went out to drive Uber and make some extra money to support her family. She picked up 22-year-old Calvin Crew as her dash cam was recording.
The mother of 4 tried to chat with Crew, but he didn’t respond to her. After about 20 minutes, she reached the drop-off destination. As she inquired what side of the street, he wanted to be dropped off on, Crew pulled out a gun and put it to Spicuzza’s head. She tried to reason with him saying, “why are you doing this?” and “I have four kids, what are you doing?”
Crew responded, “I have a family too, now drive.” Shortly after, he took the 38-year-old’s cellphone. He also disconnected her dash cam and later threw it out the window.
Her cash app was accessed multiple times as they drove through several neighborhoods. Eventually, they made their way to Monroeville, PA, where Spicuzza was shot to death and left in a wooded area.
Investigation
Her boyfriend reported her missing on February 11th when he couldn’t reach her and she didn’t come home. Her car was found 2 days later and her body was found 4 hours after that.
Police were able to determine that Crew’s girlfriend, Tanaya Mullen, was the person who requested Spicuzza’s last Uber before she went missing on February 10th.
When Mullen came in for questioning on February 14th, Crew went with her.
During questioning, Mullen told police that she had called the Uber that night for Crew. She also told them she bought a gun in the summer that had gone missing. They asked why she didn’t report it stolen. She said she had just given birth and was in and out of the hospital with COVID.
Crew was asked about what happened the night Spicuzza went missing. He said he took the Uber to his destination and was dropped off. He said he went to an old residence where he used to live to collect some mail, then took the bus home.
Police didn’t have enough to arrest him for murder right away, but they arrested him for an outstanding warrant. Over the following days they followed up on his story, and it didn’t match surveillance footage, and the current tenant at his old place said he had no visitors that night.
After recovering the dashcam and flash card and tying his cellphone data to the crime, Crew was booked for the murder of Spicuzza on the 17th.
He was facing charges of homicide, tampering with evidence, robbery, and several other charges and was looking at the death penalty.
