Crime
On March 23, 2018, just before 18-year-old Cameron Herrin was in his brand new Ford Mustang GT with his 20-year-old brother, Tristan Herrin, riding shotgun.
Cameron was racing his 17-year-old friend, John Barrineau’s Nissan, down a street in Tampa, Florida.
The two vehicles were driving in a 45-mile-per-hour zone, but they got reckless and started driving up to 100 miles per hour.
At the same time they were flying down the street 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger-Raubenolt, and her 21-month-old daughter, Lillia were crossing the street. They were struck by Cameron’s Mustang.
Reisinger-Raubenolt passed away that day, while her daughter died in the hospital the next day.
Investigators estimated Cameron was going 102 miles per hour moments before the collision, but was down to about 30 to 40 miles per hour just before he hit the mother and daughter.
Tristan was charged with one count of street racing, but the charge was later dropped.
Barrineau and Cameron were both charged with street racing and two counts of vehicular homicide.
Legal Proceedings
Barrineau pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and a racing charge for his role in the crash. He agreed to serve six years in prison along with 15 years of probation. He was released on January 14th, 2026.
Cameron also pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and a racing charge.
His defense team tried to strike deals with the state for 10 years, 15 years, and even 18 years, but each time the state declined, so Cameron was forced to put his fate in the hands of the judge.
The sentencing guidelines suggested a minimum of 18.5 years and a maximum of 30 years, according to Fox13News. Cameron and his defense team were hoping for less than that, but they got much more.
The judge sentenced Cameron to 24 years in prison because he had a track record of using excessive speed while driving.
Herrin was shocked to learn he would be in prison until his early 40s. His projected release date is November 22, 2043.
