Murders of Tasha Vandiver and Gerald Walton

In February 2020, first responders in Monroe County, Georgia, arrived at the scene of a house fire. Once the flames were extinguished, they discovered the bodies of 36-year-old Tasha Vandiver and her son, 21-year-old Gerald Walton, who had special needs. Investigators quickly determined the fire had not started naturally. It was arson — and before long, suspicion focused on someone close to home: Tasha’s teenage daughter, Candace Walton.

Candace was just sixteen years old at the time. Hours after the fire, police located her across state lines in Kentucky, driving her mother’s car. Inside the vehicle, officers found money and items taken from the burned house. What looked at first like a desperate act of escape soon came into focus as the culmination of a calculated plan.

Investigation and Prosecution

Detectives pieced together how the fire had been set. It started in the living room, near the home’s only clear exit. Papers had been piled on the couch and set alight, creating a blaze that trapped the victims inside. According to prosecutors, Candace had not acted alone.

She and her boyfriend, 17-year-old Kaleo Pangelinan, had been plotting the murders for months. Their plan was for Candace to remove the people standing in the way of their relationship and then run off to Oregon and be with Kaleo.

Digital evidence revealed the depth of the planning. Messages between Candace and Kaleo showed the two discussing different methods: a gun, a knife, even suffocation. Eventually, they agreed that fire would not only be effective but might look like an accident. The investigation also uncovered that this was not Candace’s first attempt to harm her family.

Prosecutors presented evidence that she had previously tried to poison her mother and brother by lacing meals with substances she believed would kill them. Those attempts failed, leading her to carry out their arson plan in February.

The charges reflected the severity of the crime. Candace faced counts of malice murder, felony murder, first-degree arson, and theft.

Even though Kaleo wasn’t present when the fire was set, he was charged with two counts of murder.

Despite her age, Candace was prosecuted as an adult. In February 2022, she entered a blind guilty plea, meaning there was no negotiated deal or agreed-upon sentence.

Sentencing

At the sentencing hearing, prosecutors pressed for the harshest penalty: two consecutive life terms, ensuring she would never have the possibility of parole. They argued the crime was premeditated and cruel, leaving no room for mercy. The defense pointed to her youth, arguing that rehabilitation should still be considered.

In the end, the judge imposed two concurrent life sentences, making Candace eligible for parole after thirty years. Candace’s promise of escape and reinvention ended not on the road to Oregon but in a Georgia prison, where she now serves the sentence for betraying her own family.

Kaleo Pangelinan’s Guilty Plea and Punishment

Kaleo, on the other hand, got off easy and pleaded guilty to a count of first-degree Arson. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
