Duke Lacrosse Incident

In March 2006, Crystal Mangum and Kim Mera Roberts danced at a party for Duke Lacrosse players. When the men suggested the two use a broomstick to pleasure themselves, the ladies locked themselves in a bathroom.

After leaving the party, the two women got into a dispute. Kim wanted Crystal to get out of her car, but Crystal refused. Police were called to the scene. They took Crystal to a mental health and substance abuse facility, where she accused Duke players of violating her. She claimed she and Kim had split up after leaving the bathroom, and that was when it happened.

She was given a medical exam and later picked three men from photo arrays.

District Attorney Mike Nifong was in an election year, so he withheld evidence and pursued the case.

Reade Seligmann, David Evans, and Collin Finnerty were hit with charges of forcible sexual assault, first-degree sexual offense, and kidnapping, but the charges were dropped in April 2007.

Nifong was disbarred, but Crystal was not charged with a crime despite the false accusations.

2010 Domestic Incident

On February 17th, 2010, police were called to Crystal’s building because she was fighting with her boyfriend at the time, Milton Walker.

She decided to burn her clothes right in front of the police. She caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the building.

She was charged with arson, attempted murder, and several other charges. She was convicted of lesser charges of delinquency of a juvenile, injury to personal property, and resisting a public officer.

The jury deadlocked on the felony arson charges. She received 88 days, which she had already served, and the DA decided not to retry her for the arson charge.

Fatal Stabbing of Reginald Daye

On April 3rd, 2011, she stabbed her boyfriend, Reginald Daye. Daye was taken to the hospital, and Crystal was arrested.

She reportedly had injuries to her arms and hands and a fat lip when they took her in.

A day later, Daye was admitted to attacking Crystal, and when she hid in the bathroom, he kicked in the door and dragged her out by her hair. However, he said he was walking away from her when he was stabbed.

Daye passed away 10 days after the incident, and Crystal got hit with a second-degree murder charge.

Legal Proceedings

At trial, her attorneys blame Daye’s death on a medical error.

In addition, Crystal claimed self-defense, but with her history of lying and the 2010 domestic incident against her previous boyfriend, she wasn’t credible.

She was convicted and sentenced to 14 to 18 years in a North Carolina prison.

Prison Confession

In December 2024, Crystal came clean about the Duke case, admitting she lied, stating, “I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong, and I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me. I made up a story that wasn’t true because I wanted validation from people and not from God.
