Background

Diane Michelle Zamora was born on January 21st, 1978. She was a high achiever who aspired to be an astronaut. While attending Crowley High School in Crowley, Texas, she was a member of the National Honors Society and participated in several extracurricular activities.

She was focused on her studies more than boys or friends and wasn’t seen as highly social.

In 1991, the 13-year-old met David Graham when they were both in an Air Force auxiliary training program that taught youth about military life.

Graham was also a high achiever with a bright future. He attended Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Texas. He ran track, got excellent grades, and was a battalion commander in his high school’s Junior ROTC program.

Even though they crossed paths in 1991, the two didn’t become a couple until August 1995.

They were obsessed with each other, and a month later, they announced their engagement. They planned to wed in 2000 after they both graduated from college. But those plans would never come to fruition.

Crime

On November 4th, 1995, Graham alleges he drove his Mansfield High School track teammate, 16-year-old Adrianne Jones, home. He claims he pulled over behind an elementary school, and the two had a sexual encounter.

Gramham confessed the secret to Zamora a month later after she kept asking him if he was messing with other girls.

A distraught Zamora demanded her lover take Jones’s life to make it up to her. She even threatened to delete herself if he did not kill Jones.

Over the next couple of days, the couple made plans to kill Jones, have sex with her body, and dump her in a lake with weights tied to her body.

On December 3rd, 1995, Graham contacted Jones and convinced her to sneak out of the house to meet. She got into his car, unaware that Zamora was hiding in the backseat.

At around 12:30 am on December 4th, they put their murderous plan into action at a deserted area near Grand Prairie, Texas. Zamora attacked Jones while Graham tried to snap her neck like in the movies. She fought back, and Zamora hit her with a weight to subdue her, but it didn’t work.

Jones got out of the car and ran for her life. Graham tracked her down and shot her twice in the head, killing her.

After he returned to the vehicle, the couple’s first words to each other were, “I love you.” After that, they got rid of their bloody clothes and returned home as if nothing ever happened.

Zamora cleaned her car and later wrote in her journal, “Adrianne 01:38 am”.

Jones’s body was found on December 4th, 1995. Detectives had no clue who killed the lovable teen who was planning to study at Texas A&M in the future, and the case went cold.

Capture

Graham and Zamora graduated from their respective high schools in spring 1996. Graham enrolled at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Zamora attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Despite being thousands of miles apart, they wrote letters to each other daily.

The two had gotten away with a heinous murder; all they had to do was keep their mouths shut, but Zamora couldn’t do it. She told two of her roommates about the crime. The girls turned her in to their superiors at the academy, and they contacted Grand Prairie police detectives.

Once they put the pieces together, they were able to arrest both Graham and Zamora for capital murder on September 6th, 1996.

Both teens confessed to the crime during interrogation, telling identical stories. They later recanted and blamed each other.

During the investigation, it came to light that Graham did not give Jones a ride after the track meet on November 4th, 1995. Over the years, Graham has flip-flopped on whether the two ever had a sexual encounter.

Trial

Zamora’s trial started in February 1998 and lasted two weeks.

Zamora admitted to being at the crime scene but claimed she did not participate in the murder. The jury deliberated for a little over 6 hours before finding Zamora guilty of capital murder on February 17th, 1998.

The 20-year-old was given 40 years to life in prison.

Graham went to trial five months later. His defense team claimed he wasn’t at the crime scene, but they did not offer an alibi.

He was convicted of the exact charges as his former lover and also sentenced to 40 years to life.

Both will be eligible for parole on September 5th, 2036
