In October 2019, police in Fall River, Massachusetts, responded to one of the most violent homicides the city had seen in years. 68-year-old Ana Vasquez-Rodriguez, the victim, had been stabbed dozens of times inside her bedroom. The brutality of the attack stunned even veteran officers — and the suspect shocked them further. It was Ana’s 15-year-old relative, Heavenly Arroyo.

Heavenly Arroyo had only recently moved from Rochester, New York, to live with her great-uncle and his family. Ana, who had suffered a stroke that left her bedridden, was part of that household. Despite her condition, she was known as the family’s center of warmth and care. Heavenly, meanwhile, was under her great-uncle’s guardianship, and the family was in the process of formally adopting her.

On October 6, Heavenly grew agitated over delays in her custody paperwork. Investigators later said this frustration escalated into rage. She retrieved a pair of scissors from the kitchen, walked into Ana’s room, and stabbed her approximately seventy times in what prosecutors described as a “brutally impulsive act.”

Afterward, Heavenly attempted to conceal what she had done. She showered, changed clothes, and initially claimed a masked intruder had broken into the house and killed Ana. Surveillance footage and inconsistencies in her account quickly unraveled that story. During questioning, Heavenly eventually admitted her role, reportedly telling officers, “I killed the old lady, and I am sorry.”

Because of the severity of the crime, prosecutors charged Heavenly with second-degree murder in adult court, despite her being just 15 years old. In January 2023, at age 18, she pleaded guilty. A judge sentenced her to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 19 years. That means Arroyo could one day be released in her mid-thirties.

For the Vasquez-Rodriguez family, the outcome was a reminder that justice in court does not erase loss. Ana had survived a stroke and remained the center of her family’s daily life, only to be taken in a sudden act of violence inside her own home. The sentencing brought accountability, but it could not restore what her loved ones lost.

One woman is gone, and a teenager will spend much of her life in prison — a tragedy with no true resolution.
