Sierra Halseth’s and Aaron Guerrero’ Relationship
According News3lv, Sierra Halseth and Aaron Guerrero started dating in June 2020, and at some point in the relationship, they planned to run away to Los Angeles, California. Sierra’s dad, Daniel Halseth, and Guerrero’s parents learned of this plan, and of course, they were not on board. They felt the relationship was getting too serious, and the teens were told they had to stop seeing each other.
Murder of Daniel Halseth
Daniel preventing Sierra from seeing Guerrero came with fatal consequences, as his daughter decided Guerrero was more important. On April 8th, 2021, Daniel was stabbed 70 times, dismembered, and set on fire in a horrifying attack at the hands of his Sierra and Guerrero, who were 16 and 18, respectively.
After eliminating Daniel from the picture, the two teens took his vehicle and his credit cards and fled the Las Vegas area. They planned to make their way to California to start new lives. While they were on the run, they made a crude video celebrating what they had done with Guerrero saying, “Welcome back to our YouTube channel three days after murdering somebody.” Sierra wasn’t too broken up and giggled at her lover’s unprovoked confession, while saying, “Whoa! Don’t put that on camera.”
The following day, Daniel’s mother contacted authorities for a welfare check, saying she hadn’t heard from her son in two days. They contacted Daniel’s landlord, and he and another person went to the home and found Daniel’s charred body in the garage, Fox5vegas reported.
Investigation And Arrests
According to New3lv, a bloody knife and handsaw were found at the scene, and it was obvious that the killers attempted to clean up.
Police became suspicious that Sierra and Guerrero were involved when, according to News3lv, Guerrero’s parents showed up at the murder scene. They confirmed that the couple was forced to break up after their plot to run away together was exposed. According to Fox5vegas, they told police the relationship ended in December 2020.
They also revealed that Guerrero had run away from home on April 8th, and they suspected he would be with Sierra.
The detectives also spoke with Daniel’s ex-wife. She revealed that she and Daniel had a shared bank account, and after seeing some odd transactions on April 8th, she tried to reach him, but got no answer. This led investigators to look into those purchases, and soon, the recovered video of the teens buying cleaning supplies, lighter fluid, and tools to cut up the body, News3lv reported.
Additional video evidence near the crime scene showed Daniel’s car leaving the area with two people inside it.
Warrants were issued for the duo’s arrest. They were stopped 5 days later in Salt Lake City, Utah, by transit officers after they didn’t pay their light rail fares. After running background checks, officers discovered the warrants. They were taken into custody, effectively ending the romance they had just killed for.
Additional evidence was recovered in Salt Lake City. Police had receipts for the items purchased to cut up Daniel’s body and clean up the crime scene. They also found a blood-soaked rug Daniel’s vehicle, which the teens had stolen.
News3lv reported that the couple was extradited to Las Vegas on April 22, 2021, and booked in the Clark County detention center.
Sentencing
According to New3lv, after sitting in prison for a year, both teens pleaded guilty to nine counts, including murder with a deadly weapon and first-degree arson in May 2022. They agreed to a plea deal that would have them serve 22 years to life in prison. At the sentencing hearing 5 months later, one of Daniel’s family members told the court they should have gotten the death penalty for their actions.
When Guerrero spoke, he cried, apologized, and appeared remorseful, telling the court, “I ask for your forgiveness.” He also said he hoped that his sentencing would bring the victim’s family “more peace.”
When Sierra spoke, she was emotionless and launched accusations that her father was abusive, saying “he locked me in places starts pushing and hitting me around”. She did not offer an apology and showed little emotion as her disappointed family looked on.
Her grandmother spoke to the news after the verdict, saying that Sierra was no longer her granddaughter.
Guerrero also spoke out after the verdict and before he was shipped to his new home in Indian Springs, Nevada.
Both will be eligible for parole in 2043. They no longer have a relationship.
