Anthony Balaam was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on July 9th, 1965.

Much of his life remains a mystery, but he did have a 10-year relationship that produced two kids. He also had some run-ins with the law that led to convictions for burglary and drug-related offenses.

But by the time he was 29, he was a crack addict. He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds, and was considered soft-spoken by many who met him. One officer would later say he was ”one of the calmest and coolest murderers I’ve encountered.”

As Balaam rode around the streets at night, he was able to use his peaceful demeanor and the offer of drugs for sex to get women into his vehicle.

He killed 41-year-old Karen Denise Patterson on October 24th, 1994. 29-year-old Valentina Cuyler met the same fate on March 19th, 1995. A few weeks later, on April 10th, 1995, 27-year-old Connie Hayward was killed.

His final victim was 37-year-old Deborah Ann Walker on July 29th, 1996.

DNA evidence linked the crimes to Balaam, and he was arrested on August 8th, 1996, for four counts of murder as well as robbery and weapons charges.

He was convicted of four counts of murder and four counts of aggravated sexual assault at trial. The jury decided against the death penalty, and in January 2001, he was sentenced to four consecutive 30-year to life sentences for the murders and 15 years for each of the aggravated sexual assault convictions.

He will be eligible for parole in August 2116.
