Brittany Zamora’s Background
Brittany Zamora graduated from Arizona State University with a 4.0 GPA and an undergraduate and graduate degree.
She started teaching at Littleton Elementary in Avondale, Arizona, in 2016. Despite her limited experience, she won Teacher of the Year.
Crime
The Littleton elementary principal moved on to Las Brisas Academy, a preschool through 8th-grade elementary school in Goodyear, Arizona, and recruited Zamora to teach there.
In late 2017, the married 27-year-old told her class she planned to be off work. She assumed she would be bored, so she asked her students to send her messages on Classcraft, an online role-playing game teachers use to manage students and keep them engaged.
One 13-year-old sent the message, “Hi Ms. Zamora.” That simple message led Zamora down a dark path. Zamora quickly started flirting with him.
Soon, the 27-year-old was doing inappropriate things with the innocent boy, even in class with other students present.
A few students reported their suspicions about Zamora to the principal on February 7th, 2018. Zamora denied the accusations, and even though the principal felt there was some inappropriate behavior, he didn’t suspect abuse and didn’t contact any parents.
Zamora wasn’t phased by almost getting caught and continued to violate the boy throughout February and March.
Capture
Fortunately, the boy’s stepmother noticed he was acting differently, so she installed a monitoring app on his phone.
On March 21st, 2018, the app alerted the stepmother that the word “baby” was being used repeatedly in an Instagram message conversation.
She was shocked to see that the person sending the messages was their son’s teacher. The boy’s parents confronted him, and he confessed that Zamora had been having her way with him for three months.
The victim’s parents contacted the principal that night, and he alerted the cops.
It’s unclear how Zamora learned she was caught, but that night, she called the victim’s father and asked to meet and settle things. The victim’s father responded by asking her, “What type of fucking perverted person are you?”
After that, Zamora put her spouse on the phone, but the victim’s father was not in the mood for games and continued to go off.
Zamora was arrested the next day and hit with 15 felony charges. She expressed fear about going to jail, saying, “I’m little, they’re gonna tear me apart.”
At her initial bond hearing, the petite blond told the judge she “would love to go home to my husband.”
Her bond was set at $250,000, and she remained behind bars.
Conviction
Zamora pleaded guilty to three charges in June 2019 as part of a deal with prosecutors.
She was facing up to 44 years, but in July 2019, the judge sentenced her to a minimum of 20 years because she had no criminal history and exams indicated she was unlikely to re-offend.
In addition to her decades in prison, she will be on lifetime probation, and she will be on the offender registry for the rest of her life.
Life in prison
Zamora is serving her 20-year sentence at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is the only women’s prison in Arizona.
Zamora is in the same complex where Jodi Arias is housed; however, the two are in different units. Arias is in the Lumley Unit, while Zamora is in the SANTA CRUZ Unit.
One former Perryville inmate predicted that Zamora would spend most of her prison time in isolation because her crime was against a child, but the ex-inmate was incorrect.
When she arrived at the prison, Zamora was placed in medium security, likely in a cell with a roommate or a dorm with at least ten other inmates. At that time the prison had no air conditioning.
She remains a medium security inmate in 2025. However, she no longer had to endure intense heat as the prison was recently upgraded with air conditioning.
In September 2021, Zamora got a tutor certificate and can teach other inmates.
The Arizona corrections website indicates she had several work assignments over the years, including “self-control” and “family ties.”
Her last work assignment was titled “Social Values; however, rather than work assignments, it is likely that these were classes she took.
Zamora is now divorced.
Her release date is March 16th, 2038; she will be 47 when she gets out.
