Background
Michael Madison was born on October 15th, 1977, to Diane Madison. His reported father, John, denied being the dad and took no part in raising him.
From the very start of his childhood, Michael faced extreme levels of abuse at the hands of his mother, Diane, and also from her partners.
According to sources, Diane rarely celebrated his birthday and didn’t allow him to play with other kids, making him feel alienated.
The Department of Child and Family Services intervened multiple times to deal with the situation; however, nothing changed.
Michael was removed from Diane’s care and sent to his grandmother. But the environment she provided him with was equally neglectful and toxic as she was reportedly an ex-sex worker and heroin addict.
He would later go back to live with his mother after she got counseling, but it didn’t help, and Michael was constantly in and out of the hospital.
In his teen years, Michael started to exhibit troubled behavior. He fled from home when he was 16 and started living on his own, managing places to stay, taking drugs, exhibiting inappropriate sexual behavior, and crimes.
For example, at 17, he faced charges of delinquency for inappropriate sexual contact with a classmate. By age 20, he was incarcerated for drug-related offenses. In 2001, he attempted to rape an 18-year-old woman, dragging her behind a house. However, police arrived in time to stop the attack, and Madison was sentenced to four years in prison for attempted rape; where he underwent treatment for sex offenders, but nothing changed in him.
Murders
Michael’s murder spree began in 2012 when he was 34 years old. His first victim was a 28-year-old mother, Shetisha Sheeley, who was last seen in September 2012. She was very close to her family, and everyone was alarmed by her disappearance. But the situation became even more frightening when her brother was murdered, and she missed his funeral.
His second victim was 38-year-old Angela Deskins, a student and self-employed worker who was last seen on June 7th, 2013. Her loved ones describe her as a fun-loving and beautiful woman.
And his last victim was Shirellda Terry, an 18-year-old summer employee at a local elementary school. She disappeared on July 10th, 2013, after leaving her job.
On July 19th, 2013, Michael’s downstairs neighbors reported a foul odor coming from a garage behind the property. Upon searching it, police found a dead body there, which was later identified as Terry. The officer soon found the body of Sheeley behind the garage and Deskins in an abandoned home about 20 yards from the garage.
All the victims were found wrapped in garbage bags. Terry and Deskins’s cause of death was reported as strangulation, but Sheeley’s cause of death could not be determined.
Within hours of finding the bodies, authorities got a search warrant for Michael’s residence. They found evidence that the bodies had been in the unit before being moved outside.
Authorities went to his mother’s house to arrest him, but he wasn’t ready to give in.
After a tense two-hour standoff, police finally arrested him and took him to the police station.
On July 21st, 2013, after days of questioning, he confessed to the murders. Michael went into detail about the murder of his first victim, Sheeley. Yet, he claimed he didn’t remember killing Terry because he was drunk and high at the time. He also said he didn’t remember killing Deskins.
Legal Proceedings
Michael faced 14 charges, including aggravated murder, kidnapping, and gross abuse of a corpse. The defense team claimed his childhood abuse and traumatic past made him incapable of having the mental state required for the crime.
On May 20th, 2016, the jury convicted Michael on all counts. The severity of his crimes, alongside the lack of empathy and remorse, led to a swift recommendation of the death penalty.
During the sentencing phase, the father of Shirellda Terry confronted Michael. He got angry when he found Michael smirking and attempted to attack him, but people in the courtroom restrained him. This emotional outburst showed how deep the scars Michael left were.
The judge imposed the death penalty on Michael, considering that all the crimes he committed were premeditated, calculated, and heinous. Despite multiple appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court upheld the sentence.
Michael Madison’s life was full of abuse, hatred, and violence, and his case serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of untreated trauma, systemic failures, and societal neglect. While his conviction and death sentence bring closure to some, the scars left on the victims’ families and the East Cleveland community remain unhealed.
